Before the brassiere women used the corset as the bust supporter waist cincher and as a foundation to hold up the skirts. It made a good back support for working women which is why you see tight bodices on some European peasant women's folk costumes. The bra came in when women didn't use a corset for any reason and it's use really took off pre WW One when the line of the corsets went down to the waist and hips and no longer supported the bust. The heavily structured bras were more toward the 1950s.
